The most common way for a cell to die is by a process called apoptosis. Apoptosis is a cell death process triggered by the cell via complex cascades in response to a stimulus. Apoptotic cell death is a useful process. It is involved in the regulation of the amount of cells for a certain tissue. It is involved in embryogenesis, for example in getting rid of the web tissue between our fingers. Apoptosis also protects us from cancer, as cells with damaged DNA will feel this and start the cell death process so that they do not evolve into a tumor.
