Gram staining is a staining technique which is performed to identify bacteria on the basis of the properties of their cell wall. This technique was developed by Hans Christian Gram in 1884. 
Some bacteria are able to take up the Gram stain and are called Gram positive bacteria while the others are not able to take it up and are called as Gram negative bacteria.
