The term 'prokaryotic' is made up of two words pro = "primitive" and  karyon = "nucleus". Thus, a prokaryotic cell is a type of cell which lacks a true nucleus and membrane-bound cell organelles. The genetic material of such cell is not enclosed within a nuclear membrane and lies freely in the cytoplasm in a region called nucleoid. Best examples of organisms with prokaryotic cells are members of kingdom Monera which includes Bacteria, Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) and Mycoplasmas.
