In the atmosphere, the first most abundant gas is nitrogen (70%). Then comes oxygen (20%). And the rest 10% is occupied with other gases including carbon dioxide. All the gases in the atmosphere are taken in during inhalation, however, nitrogen is inert and thus, does not bind to hemoglobin. It is oxygen that binds with hemoglobin and has a function in our body.
