The word 'phycos' means 'algae' and 'mycetes' refers to fungal group. Thus, phycomycetes means fungi with algal characters.

Phycomycetes is a class of fungi characterised by aseptate (without cross walls) and coenocytic (multinucleated) mycelium. They reproduce by both asexual and sexual spores. The asexual spores could be non-motile (aplanospore) and motile (zoospore). The sexual spore is called zygospore and is formed by the fusion of two gametes.  

Examples of phycomycetes are - Mucor, Rhizopus and Albugo
