It is an alternation of generations between sexual and asexual reproduction. It is generally shown by cnidarians which exhibit both forms- polyps, medusae. Polyps produce medusae asexually and medusae forms polyps sexually such as obellia.

Example-  The development from egg may be direct, or may take place with an alternation of generation i.e. metagenesis.
