Phycomycetes are a group of fungi, which are further subdivided into oomycetes and zygomycetes. Zygomycetes are the sub group which are often referred to as conjugation fungi. This is so because among these fungi, instead of the spores being produced on conspicuous spore-producing bodies such as mushrooms or cups, they are produced in very small structures that form when the fungal hyphae "come into conjunction," or meet one another. That is why these are called conjugation fungi.
