Octopus do not have shell like most other molluscs chiefly because their ancestors lost their shells. This allowed them to become more intelligent and adaptable. However, they still possess characteristics of molluscs which is why they are kept under this phylum. They possess a soft body, mantle and a radula which are only seen in members of phylum Mollusca.
