Air bladders maintain bouyancy and help the fishes to swim at the desired depth. They prevent the fishes from sinking down.

However, the cartilaginous fishes do not have swim bladders. Therefore, they have to swim continuously to prevent themselves from sinking. Thus, such fishes never sleep!
