Amoeba is unicellular eukaryotic organism. It a protozoan which belongs to the kingdom Protista.

Amoeba was discovered by Russel von Rosenhoff in 1755. It is characterised by a contractile vacuole which is involved in excretion and osmoregulation. Mitochondria are often seen aggregated around the contractile vacuole. Amoeba has an irregular shape and moves with the help of pseudopodia (false-feet). It ingests its food by extending the pseudopodia, thereby engulfing the food material inside its cell in the form of a food vacuole.
