Some characteristics of phylum Porifera (sponges) are:
- Generally marine, some may be freshwater (e.g. Spongilla)
- Sessile – remain attached to the substratum
- Generally asymmetrical with cellular level of organization
- Body of sponges have many pores called ‘ostia’. Water enters into the body through ostia.
- Spongocoel = central body cavity islined by flagellated cells called choanocytes or collar cells
- Osculum = a large pore through which water moves out of the sponge body.
- Body has skeleton made up of : spicules (calcalerous or silicious) and spongin fibres.
