Cortex is a specialized layer of cytoplasmic protein found on the inner surface of the plasma membrane of the cell periphery. It functions as a modulator of plasma membrane behavior and cell surface properties.

Phloem is made up of only more than one type of cells, which look identical. It constitute the component parts of the vascular bundle. The movement of food in the phloem is bidirectional (i.e., upward and downward).
