A paraxial ray is a ray which is parallel to the principal axis.

This ray makes a small angle to the principal axis of the system, and lies close to the axis throughout the system.

The sines of the angles between the rays and the optical axis in case of paraxial rays may be taken as the angles themselves in the calculation.
