During sunset, the path of the sunlight through our atmosphere increases in length, VIBGYOR encounters more and more atmospheric particles. This results in the scattering of greater amounts of reddish light. This means the a large amount of blue and violet light has been scattered so the light that is recieved by an observer is mostly of a longer wavelength and therefore appears to be red. The phenomenon os called Rayleigh scattering.
