A pigment is any substance material that changes the color of reflected or transmitted light as the result of wavelength-selective absorption.

There are seven primary colors - violet, blue, indigo, green, yellow, orange, red. Any other color, like the ones that you see for paints and pigments can be produced by combining two or more of these colors. Thus, the spectral colors represents the basic colors that are primarily present and observed.
