When magnesium reacts with hot water, it forms magnesium hydroxide and hydrogen.
Mg + 2H2O à Mg (OH)2 + H2
Magnesium does not react with cold water as it gets a coating of insoluble magnesium hydroxide, hence preventing water from coming into contact with magnesium.
