recessive characters are observed when both parents carry recessive charecters. But in mendel experiment-pea plant, f2 generation carries cross pollination between 2 tall plants. Then why one fourth are short ones?

Recessive characters can come in two conditions -
1. Either both parents are recessive individuals, or
2. They are carriers of the recessive trait.
In Mendels experiment, though the phenotype of the plnts were tall (that is dominant), they were carrriers of the dwarf trait genotypically. That is why a cross between them yielded a dwarf progeny as well, which comprised of 1/4 th of the total number of progenies.
