In water, that is H2O, there are 2 atoms of hydrogen and 1 atom of oxygen in a molecule of water. Thus upon electrolysis, water molecules break into hydrogen and oxygen. Thus one molecule of water gives 2 hydrogens and only 1 oxygen. Thus, the amount of hydrogen gas collected is always double in amount compared to the oxygen gas collected from electrolysis of water.
