If we are dealing with a polyatomic ion with a negative charge add the necessary electrons to Step 1 to account for the charge.
If the polyatomic ion has a positive charge, subtract the necessary electrons to Step 1 to account for the positive charge.
Draw the skeletal structure of the molecule by placing a line between each pair of bonded atoms.
Arrange the atoms in such a way where the surrounding atoms each have a complete outer shell of electrons.
Add the remaining electrons to the central atom.
Adjust the number of electrons so that central atom has completely filled octet.
