Question:
What is a catalyst? Why it is required while addition reaction? Why only Nickle or Palladium metals can be used as catalyst?
Answer:

A substance that increases the rate of reaction without itself undergoing chemical change permanently.

Hydrogenation requires the catalyst to perform a reaction at reasonable rate. The reaction will go without catalyst but requires a very high temperature.

Hydrogenation is a very complex reaction.Addition of a metal i.e. nickel, palladium can increases its rate. It is a process of 4 steps, In the first step hydrogen reacts with the metal catalyst.
