

The major difference is in the way these compounds are formed.
An ionic compound is formed by the loss of electrons from one atom in the compound and the simultaneous gain of electrons by another atom in the same compound. Thus they have higher melting points and electrical conductivity.
A carbon compound is formed from the covalent sharing of electrons between carbon and the other atoms in these compounds. Thus they have lower melting points and electrical conductivity.
