Quick lime is nothing but calcium oxide, Cao, which is basic in nature. Most of the time the soils in the agricultural fields contain acidic substances, which brings down the pH of the soil. In such cases the growth of plants is really poor in such soils. Thus quick lime is added to the soil so as to neutrlaise the acids in it and bring the pH to around 7, which is optimum for the growth of the plants.
