Question:
Water in a canal, 6 m wide and 1.5 m deep, is flowing at a speed of 4 km/h. How much area will it irrigate in 10 minutes, if 8 cm of standing water is needed for irrigation?
Answer:

Given,

Width of the canal = 6 m

Depth of the canal = 1.5 m

Speed = 4 km/h

Length of the water flowing in 10 minutes = 4/(10/60) = (4*60)/10 = 4*6 = 24 km

Now 24 km = 24*1000 m = 24000 m

Now, volume of the water flowing(cuboid) = length*breadth*height = 24000*6*1.5 = 216000 m3

Let x m2  area are irrigated in 8 cm or 8/100 m

=> x*(8/100) = 216000

=> x = 216000*(8/100)

=> x = (216000*100)/8

=> x = 27000*100

=> x = 2700000 m2

Hense, the canal irrigated 2700000 m2 area in 10 minutes.
