Again when written in the from 1/√2, it means divide 1 into √2 pieces.
This does not make sense conceptually because we can not count √2
When we multiply √2 in numerator and denominator, we get √2/2 which is the division of a finite quantity into a countable number of pieces
while 1/√2 does not.
So, we rationalize the number.
